Saturday: Harriers v Sutton

A look ahead to Saturday’s FA Trophy challenge…

HARRIERS will hope to cause an Isuzu FA Trophy upset on Saturday when National League promotion chasers Sutton come to Aggborough.

The two sides meet in a Fifth Round clash with aims of making the quarter-finals in addition to having domestic ambitions; Harriers going well in National League North and Sutton on the cusp of the play-offs a division higher.

Saturday sees the action boil down to a one-off Cup tie, our guests managed by Steve Morison, who knows more than enough about inflicting heartache on Harriers fans in the FA Trophy. He netted the dramatic late winner for Stevenage to win the FA Trophy at the expense of the Reds in 2007 with 53,000 watching on.

Years later, he’s now charged with steering Sutton back to the EFL – from where they were relegated – and another outing to Wembley would undoubtedly go down nicely, too.

To upset that apple cart, Harriers must use all they can to their home advantage; including, says Phil Brown, the fact the game is being played at Aggborough.

He explained: “It’s a home tie, and I’d like to see that home tie pay an advantage if we possibly can, but it’s not going to be easy.

“It’s going to be a test of footballing skill. I think they’re going to be a team that will come here and try and play and, from where they are in their league, it’s going to be a very good challenge.

“We know what that’s all about what the leagues around us are all about and what teams are capable of doing.

“Thankfully, it’s not going to be a physical challenge, it’s going to be a game of football by the looks of it.”

Brown added: “If we can get the bums off the seats and excite the punters in the manner that we played against Warrington as opposed to Darlington, then it should be a damn good game of football.”

This will be the first meeting of Harriers and Sutton since a 2013 FA Cup tie. Roles were reversed on that day when a National League Harriers side saw off National League South outfit Sutton 4-1, Amari Morgan-Smith among the scorers.

The two have only met in FA Trophy action once, that being a 1991 tie in which Harriers also triumphed, 4-2. The good omens continue given the last league season in which these two met was the 1999-2000 campaign when Jan Molby’s Harriers picked a league double.

For the 2025 clash, Harriers will be without long-term absentees Luke Summerfield, Ben Beresford and Alex Penny; Joe Foulkes unfortunately added to that list with Brown confirming he’ll miss ‘a number of weeks’ due to his injury at Oxford City last week.

Kick off at Aggborough on Saturday is at 3:00pm.
